About Us
Storytelling has existed for centuries as a traditional
form of entertainment in Ireland. Although this tradition has been
greatly displaced by alternative forms of mass-media entertainment
over the past five decades, this art-form is currently undergoing
a major revival as evidenced by the number of storytelling festivals
and events now taking place all over the country.
County Leitrim has a particularly rich legacy
of written and oral folklore and has produced some of the country’s
finest singers, writers, storytellers and poets.
The Mohill Arts & Storytelling Festival was
first held in 1995. After a lapse of five years a second festival
was held in April 2000.
The festival has been held each year since
then and has attracted large audiences from all over Ireland. Many
of Ireland’s best-known storytellers have performed at the
event. These include John Campbell, Len Graham, Pat Speight, Niall
de Burca, Jack Lynch, Pat McGeeney, Colum Sands, Joe Brennan, Toby
Kinsella, Padraig McGinn and Liam Butler. The event is now recognised as one of the primary cultural events
in the North-West and has attracted visitors to the area from all
over Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK.
